After more than a decade of walking backyards, the right fence is usually apparent before the first lap is finished. There are tennis balls in the grass. Or a neighbor’s second story window stares down at the patio. Or the homeowner mentions, more than once, that they do not want to deal with upkeep.

Choosing between wood and aluminum comes down to two questions. How much privacy do you need, and how much maintenance are you willing to do? Aluminum gives no privacy and asks almost nothing of you. Wood gives full privacy and asks for staining every four to five years. Most people care much more about one of those than the other, and that settles it.

Privacy decides it first

Privacy does not exist with an aluminum fence. It is an open picket design, and while it is durable and good looking, it is open.

So when a homeowner starts describing what the neighbors can see from the deck, wood is already the likely answer. A solid wood fence closes off sightlines completely. It also cuts sound more than most people expect.

If the lot is already private, aluminum stays in play. Same if the fence is really about containing dogs and kids and marking the property. But when the conversation keeps circling back to the neighbors, this is a wood fence family.

Be honest about maintenance

This conversation happens constantly. Somebody wants wood for the look and the privacy, and then during the walkthrough they keep saying they want something they never have to think about. Those are two different fences.

A wood fence is a commitment. Not a big one, but a real one. A professional stain once it cures, then a light wash and a fresh coat every four to five years. Stay on that and a pine fence goes 20+ years. Skip it and Tennessee takes years off it, because summers here cook wood and winters dry it out.

Aluminum is the other end. No staining, no sealing, just an occasional wash. The material carries the manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty. Ground settles under any fence eventually, so a gate might need a small adjustment somewhere down the line, but that is the whole maintenance story.

If you keep hearing yourself say you do not want maintenance, believe yourself.

What the backyard tells a builder

Lifestyle decides this more often than any catalog does. A few things get noticed on estimates.

Balls and dogs. Tennis balls scattered across a yard are a reason to think twice about aluminum. They go clean through an open picket fence, and chasing them into the neighbor’s yard gets old in about a week. That family is happier behind wood.

Views. If the lot backs to trees, a creek, or open land, aluminum keeps all of it. People regret putting a solid wall in front of a good sightline, which is why aluminum works so well around pools and open lots.

The neighborhood. Some HOAs specify the material outright, which settles it before anything starts. Bring the guidelines to the estimate and the fence gets built inside them.

Mixing wood and aluminum

Plenty of properties get wood along the shared property lines for privacy and aluminum across the back where the view is. Running both on one property is completely normal. Planned as one design, it reads as deliberate.

Try this before you decide

Ask yourself whether you would rather stain a fence every few years or see through it forever. Whichever answer arrives faster is probably your fence.

Stand on the patio and look at every window that can see you. If any of them bother you, you want privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an aluminum fence offer any privacy? None. It is an open picket design, so there is nothing there to block a sightline. If screening the neighbors or knocking down noise is part of the reason for the fence, wood is the right call. Aluminum earns its place where security and durability matter and the view should stay open.

How much maintenance does a wood fence need compared to aluminum? Wood should be professionally stained once it cures, then washed and recoated every four to five years. That cycle is what carries it past 20 years. Aluminum needs essentially nothing beyond an occasional rinse, plus maybe a minor gate adjustment as the ground settles underneath it.

Can wood and aluminum fencing be mixed on one property? This is common, and Heron builds it often. Wood runs along the shared property lines where screening matters, and aluminum goes across open views or around a pool. Designed together from the start, mixed materials read as intentional and put the right fence on each side of the yard.

Which is better for a yard with kids and dogs? Usually wood, and balls are the reason. They pass straight through an open aluminum picket, which means somebody is retrieving them from the neighbor’s side constantly. A wood privacy fence keeps everything on one side of the line. Aluminum still works fine for dogs that just need containment.
