One mistake shows up more than any other when people go to protect a wood fence. It is easy to make, because it sounds so reasonable. Painting it.

Never paint a wood fence. Stain it. Stain soaks into the wood and protects from within. Paint forms a film on top, cracks, peels, and lets water collect underneath where it cannot dry, which takes years off a fence. For the look of paint, solid stain delivers the identical finish with real protection behind it.

What paint does to a wood fence

Paint sits on the surface as a film, and a fence takes weather from every side. Boards swell in a wet week and shrink in a dry one, and that movement cracks the film. Once it cracks, water gets behind it.

That is where the damage starts. The paint film keeps that water from drying back out, so moisture sits pressed against the wood with nowhere to go. The paint peels. The board underneath stays wet. The rot the coating was supposed to prevent arrives faster.

Stain works the other way. It absorbs into the wood, protects from inside, and moves with the board as it expands and contracts. There is nothing to peel and nothing to trap.

The painted look, done right

Most people do not know this option exists.

Solid stain delivers full, opaque color. A white fence, a black fence, whatever the vision is, it is available. The difference happens at the wood level, where the solid stain absorbs and protects while paint forms a skin. The look is the same. The outcome five years out is not.

For showing off the grain, lighter stains do that while still protecting. Either way, it is stain in some form.

The right stain program

Timing comes first. New pressure treated pine needs about four to eight weeks to cure before it can accept stain, and the full timeline has its own post. Going early produces bubbling and peeling almost the way paint would.

Then comes the cycle. Sherwin Williams SuperDeck is a product worth naming, and a quality stain applied at the right time should hold four to five years. When that window closes, the wood fence gets washed and recoated. Repeat that and 20+ years is realistic.

Staining is its own trade. Heron refers clients to partners who do it daily, and the standing advice is to hire that kind of specialist. Prep and timing carry as much weight as the product.

If a fence is already painted

It can usually be saved, but plan on a project. The failing paint has to come off, generally through washing and stripping, before the wood can accept anything else. Then the fence needs to dry out.

How involved it gets depends on how much paint remains and what shape the wood is in underneath. For a peeling painted fence where saving it is a question mark, Heron will take a look and tell you plainly, and fence repair is an option when boards have gone too far.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I stain or paint my wood fence? Stain, always. Stain absorbs into the wood and protects it from within, moving as the board moves. Paint sits on top, cracks as the wood expands and contracts, and traps water between the film and the board. That peels the finish and shortens the life of the fence.

Can a stained fence look like a painted fence? It can, and this surprises most people. Solid stain produces full, opaque color and the same finished appearance as paint, while still soaking into the wood and protecting it. That is the right way to get a white, black, or any other solid color fence.

How long does fence stain last? Figure four to five years from a quality stain, after which the fence wants a light wash and a fresh coat. Maintained on that schedule, a well built pine fence holds up past 20 years in Middle Tennessee’s climate.

What happens to a painted fence over time? The film cracks as the wood moves and water works in behind it. The coating then holds that moisture against the board with no way out. The paint peels while the trapped water speeds up rot underneath, so the fence ends up in worse shape than if it had never been coated at all.
